Book Drop of The Unbearable Lightness of Being at the Islington Second Cup

Dear finder of this book,

I think that the world chooses moments for us (or us for moments). And I know that the moment I read The Unbearable Lightness of Being I was emotionally ready for it. It had been on my bookshelf for years – picked up at a second hand bookstore in Parry Sound. This copy is covered with marginalia (not mine) but in some ways that makes it more appealing. Someone else has loved it before me, and my hope is that someone else will love it after me (namely you).

I love how it is deep and profound but painfully realistic. It’s about men and women and love and adultery and goodness but mostly about being in the wrong/right place at the wrong/right time. I like how it reminds me of Kafka because of the Czech connection AND the existential ideas. There are great moments, and unfortunately a few less great moments. But the one thing I want you to take from this book is a quote (and if that’s all you get, it’s worth it). In the last year, I’ve come back to this quote time and time again.

“The goals we pursue are always veiled. A girl who longs for marriage longs for something she knows nothing about. The boy who hankers after fame has no idea what fame is. The thing that gives our every move its meaning is always totally unknown to us.”
