Serena Ryder, thy name is chimera

Which I am I?

Serena Ryder’s new album Harmony is ill-titled.

If you are reading this letter, you must like Serena Ryder. But you need to be prepared for this album because it may not be what you think it is. I mean, iTunes says it’s Country/Folk; the library says it’s Pop. They’re both right (and wrong): the title Harmony MUST BE ironic because the album has, musically speaking, Multiple Personality Disorder. “Baby Come Back” (track 4) is the Canadian take on Adele, while “For You” channels Nina Simone, Sinatra, and moments of Portishead.

The problem isn’t the songs or the music. I love them all. But this is not a sit-down-and-play-the-whole-album kind of album; it’s a drag-each-song-into-a-different-playlist album. For that reason, Dischord would be a better name! But don’t get me wrong…there are a lot of great songs here. Enjoy!
